below and under / "Above" and "over"..Use of prepositions

"Above" and "over"

Monday, August 24, 2009

A reader asked what the difference between above and over is. Editor Emily Brewster explains:

Both above and over function as adverbs, prepositions, and adjectives, but since there is no overlap in meaning with the adjectives, I'll only address the adverbs and prepositions here.

In its most common senses, the adverb over implies movement from one location or position to another:

They climbed over the fence.

He leaned over to see what I had written.

I knocked over a glass of water.

The baby is learning to roll over.

She moved over to make room for them.

Would you come over here for minute?

I know you have the key. Hand it over, please.

==

The senses of the adverb above that function similarly imply only location, not movement:

We lay on our backs and looked at the clouds above.

Some children are fascinated by the moon and the stars above.

The maze looks like person's face when viewed from above.

You can write to us at the address shown above.

==

As prepositions, both over and above can mean "at or to a place that is higher than someone or something," but over is somewhat more common:

A light hangs over/above the table.

He raised his arms over/above his head.

She rents an apartment over/above a bookstore.

==

Both can also mean "more than something":

The movie is suitable for children over/above 13 years old.

We've been having temperatures over/above 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

I value time over/above money.

==

Again, over is the more common choice. And there are a number of contexts in which above is not used at all, despite having a meaning that technically fits:

I've been waiting for over an hour. NOT: I've been waiting for above an hour.

Over 50 people attended. NOT: Above 50 people attended.

==

Both prepositions can also mean "more loudly and clearly than (another sound)," although again, over is more common:

I could barely hear the music over/above the noise of the crowd.

==

Each preposition also has many additional senses that are not shared by the other. See each word's entry for examples of those.

Difference between below and under

The prepositions below and under have similar meanings. Both can mean 'lower than'.

Cases where below is preferred

Below can mean 'at or to a lower level'.

The people in the apartment below seldom go out.
Put your signature below.
I feel sick, I must go below. (= I must go downstairs to my cabin.)

Below: not directly under

We use below when one thing is not directly under another.

The sun sank below the horizon.
The climbers stopped 200m below the top of the mountain.

Below is used in measurements where we think of a vertical scale.

The temperature is ten degrees below zero.
The Dead Sea is below sea level.
She is below average in intelligence.

Cases where under is preferred

We prefer under when something is covered by what is over it. Under is also used when things are touching.

There is something under the bed.
He wore a shirt under his sweater.

Under can mean 'less than' or 'younger than'. Below is not used with this meaning.

There were under twenty people at the meeting. (= There were less than twenty people.)
You can't vote if you are under 18. (NOT You can't vote if you are below 18.)

70 harmful diseases caused by Pork (Pig's Meat)

DISEASES CAUSED BY PORK IN DETAIL

The following lists show germs or parasites that are found in pork and some diseases caused by them. Many of these diseases are contagious while some are proven fatal.

PARASITIC (Bloodsucking) DISEASES

a) TRICHINELLA SPIRATIS ( Trichina worms )
It is the most dangerous parasite to man (Rheumatism and muscular pain). The infected persons shown no symptoms recover very slowly some die, some reduced to permanent invalids. No one is immune from this disease and there is no cure.

b) TAENIA SOLIUM (Pork tape worm)
The worm causes malnourishment of the person leading to anemia, diarrhea, extreme depression melancholia and digestive disturbances. Cysticercosis means that larva enter the blood stream then settle down in one or more of the vital organs of the body, for example: brain, liver, lungs or spinal cord. They grow and encapsulate, inducing pressure to the system around, resulting in dangerous diseases (diarrhea, digestive disorder, anemia, chronic invalidation).

c) ROUND WORMS
Examples: Ascaris, which may lead to digestive disturbances, appendicitis, obstructive jaundice.

d) HOOK WORMS
Examples: Ancylostomiasis, which may lead to anemia, oedema, heart failure or retarded growth (mental and physical), tuberculosis, diarrhea and typhoid.
e) SCHITOSOMA JAPONICUM
Bleeding, anemia and other syndromes; if ova are settled in the brain or spinal cord, paralysis and death may occur.
f) PARAGOMINES WESTERMAINI
Infestation leading to bleeding of the lungs (endenve haemoptysis )
g) PACIOLEPSIS BUSKI
Digestive disturbances leading to persistent diarrhea; generalized oedema
h) CLONORCHIS SINENSIS
Chlonorchiasis-obstructive jaundice, liver enlargement
i) METASTRONGYLUS APRI
Causes bronchitis, abscess of the lungs
j) GIGANTHORINCHUS GIGAS
Cause anemia and digestive disorders.
k) BALATITIDIUM COLI
Causes acute dysentery and general weakness

►BACTERIAL DISEASES
Tuberculosis Fusiformis necrofurus: causing foot-rot which is very difficult to heal.
Salmonella Cholera suis: causing cholera Paratyphoid Bruceellosis: Acute, sub acute and chronic. It may lead to permanent disabilities. Swine Erysipelas: causing Erysipelas in man.

►VIRAL DISEASES
Small pox: is a source of infection to man. Japanese B-encepphalitis: It is the source of infection Influenza, foot mouth disease, gas tro-enteritis of the new born babies.

►PROTOZOAN DISEASES
Toxo plasma goundii- It is a very dangerous diseases. A new born baby of an infected woman may die within few days or weeks after delivery. But if he survives he may develop blindness or deafness. In adult chronic exhaustive fever with enlarged liver and spleen may occur. Pneumonia, or celebro- spinal meninggitis which may lead to death or madness. The patient may become blind and deaf too.

►OTHER DISEASES
Flesh of the pork is hard to digest and may lead to chronic digestive disturbances. Pimples, boils, cysts are common in pork eaters. These are some of the parasites and diseases found in pork and/ or the skin of pigs and certainly there are many more. There is still no means of killing these parasites, in the tissues, neither has anyone found a method of expelling them, even produced any specific treatment for the diseases.

►FATS IN PIGS
Pork contains more fats than other meats. Therefore, people who love of pork are fatter than others. Cholesterol is higher in their blood thus making them more flat to asthereosclerosis cardiovascular accidents and sudden death.

►PIG IS THE MOST SHAMELESS ANIMAL
The pig is the most shameless animal on the face of the earth. It is the only animal that invites its friends to have sex with its mate. In America, most people consume pork. Many times after dance parties, they have swapping of wives; i.e. many say "you sleep with my wife and I will sleep with your wife." If you eat pigs then you behave like pigs. We look upon America to be very advanced and sophisticated. Whatever they do, we follow after a few years. According to an article in Island magazine, this practice of swapping wives has become common practice in South Asia.

►PIG IS ONE OF THE FILTHIEST ANIMALS ON EARTH
The pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth. It lives and thrives on muck, feces and dirt. It is the best scavenger that I know that God has produced. In the villages they don't have modern toilets and the villagers defecate in the open air (Body releases) and Very often these releases are cleared by pigs.

Some may argue that in advanced countries like Australia, pigs are bred in very clean and hygienic conditions. Even in these hygienic conditions the pigs are kept together in sties. No matter how hard you try to keep them clean they are filthy by nature. They eat and enjoy their own as well as their neighbourly excreta.

This proves that the more science advances the more Islam is shown correct as a religion of God.

Life of a "star"

Stars are large balls of gases. New stars form from large, cold (10 degrees Kelvin) clouds of  dust and gas (mostly hydrogen) that lie between existing stars in a galaxy.
Usually, some type ofgravity disturbance happens to the cloud such as the passage of a nearby star or the shock wave from an exploding supernova.

1.       The disturbance causes clumps to form inside the cloud.
2.       The clumps collapse inward drawing gas inward by gravity.
3.       The collapsing clump compresses and heats up.
4.       The collapsing clump begins to rotate and flatten out into a disc.
5.       The disc continues to rotate faster, draw more gas and dust inward, and heat up.
6.       After about a million years or so, a small, hot (1500 degrees Kelvin), dense core forms in the disc's center called a protostar.
7.       As gas and dust continue to fall inward in the disc, they give up energy to the protostar, whichheats up more
8.       When the temperature of the protostar reaches about 7 million degrees Kelvin, hydrogen begins to fuse to make helium and release energy.
9.       Material continues to fall into the young star for millions of years because the collapse due to gravity is greater than the outward pressure exerted by nuclear fusion. Therefore, the protostar's internal temperature increases.
10.   If sufficient mass (0.1 solar mass or greater) collapses into the protostar and the temperature gets hot enough for sustained fusion, then the protostar has a massiverelease of gas in the form of a jet called a bipolar flow. If the mass is not sufficient, the star will not form, but instead become a brown dwarf.
11.   The bipolar flow clears away gas and dust from the young star. Some of this gas and dust may later collect to form planets.
12.   The young star is now stable in that the outward pressure from hydrogen fusion balances the inward pull of gravity. The star enters the main sequence; where it lies on the main sequence depends upon its mass.
Now that the star is stable, it has the same parts as our Sun:
·           core - where the nuclear fusion reactions occur
·           radiative zone - where photons carry energy away from the core
·           convective zone - where convection currents carry energy toward the surface

However, the interior may vary with respect to the location of the layers. Stars like the Sun and those less massive than the Sun have the layers in the order described above. Stars that are several times more massive than the Sun have convective layers deep in their cores and radiative outer layers. In contrast, stars that are intermediate between the Sun and the most massive stars may only have a radiative layer.

Life on the Main Sequence
Stars on the main sequence burn by fusing hydrogen into helium. Large stars tend to have higher core temperatures than smaller stars. Therefore, large stars burn the hydrogen fuel in the core quickly, whereas, small stars burn it more slowly. The length of time that they spend on the main sequence depends upon how quickly the hydrogen gets used up. Therefore, massive stars have shorter lifetimes (the Sun will burn for approximately 10 billion years). What happens once the hydrogen in the core is gone depends upon the mass of the star.

The Death
